Single Arm 10-2s: A Small Tip That Makes a Big Difference

Single Arm 10-2s: A Small Tip That Makes a Big Difference

Sometimes, training doesn’t go as planned.

Last week, I managed to slice open my right index finger at work—bad enough that gripping a mace with two hands was a problem. My first thought? Not about the pain… but about how it was going to affect my training.

I’m a big believer that movement is medicine. If I can move, I’m going to move. I just have to adjust the how. That lesson applies far beyond mace swinging—whether it’s training, work, or life, you can almost always find a way to keep going.

Working Around an Injury

With my finger out of commission for a full two handed grip, I shifted focus to movements that didn’t smash it...mostly single arm work. The nice surprise? Hand to hand 10-2s were still almost as smooth as before.

These became my primary focus while healing, and along the way I found a little trick that’s worth sharing with anyone who swings the mace.

The Two-Hand Squeeze Trick

Here’s how it works:

  • As you bring the mace over and settle it into “order” position, your opposite hand grabs the handle.

  • For just an instant—both hands squeeze the handle together.

  • That small upward “pop” helps launch the mace cleanly into the next cast.

Why it matters:

  • When you get tired, your pullovers tend to get shallow, and your positioning suffers.

  • The quick squeeze keeps your form solid, your swing powerful, and your sets longer.

It’s a tiny change, but it makes a big difference—especially in hand-to-hand transitions.

The Bigger Picture

Training isn’t always about ideal conditions. It’s about staying consistent, adapting to the situation, and taking care of your body so you can keep moving forward.

Whether you’re dealing with an injury, fatigue, or just a bad training day—don’t quit. Adjust, adapt, and keep swinging.
