The single arm or hand-to-hand 10-2 is one of the most advanced and rewarding progressions in mace training. It combines timing, coordination, and grip strength in a way that challenges even experienced lifters.
But before jumping straight into single-arm work, there’s one key step that can’t be skipped: mastering the traditional two-handed 10-2.
Step 1: Build Muscle Memory with the Standard 10-2
Start by dialing in your hand placement and rhythm with the regular 10-2.
Each rep should bring your hands below your belly button before casting the mace back over. This position isn’t just for aesthetics — it builds the muscle memory that teaches your body exactly where your hands belong on every rep.
When you eventually release one hand for the single-arm variation, this consistent point of reference ensures the free hand knows exactly where to return.
Step 2: Understand the Hand-to-Hand Transition
As the mace swings over the shoulder, there’s a brief window where both hands can touch the handle before the next cast. That’s your transition zone — where the free hand meets the working hand for a clean, secure transfer.
Avoid trying to grab the mace in the same spot your other hand is holding. This can cause slipping or loss of control. Instead, keep your hands stacked in the same orientation — a little movement up or down the handle is totally fine. You can always reset or slide down to the pommel between reps.
Step 3: Practice Control Before Adding Load
Before going heavier, focus on smoothness. Each side should feel identical — cast, swing, pull, and transfer without rushing.
Once your timing feels natural, then start gradually increasing the load or extending your set duration.
Like all mace work, the goal isn’t just strength — it’s precision and flow under tension.
Why It Matters
Developing the single-arm 10-2 teaches more than grip and coordination — it improves shoulder stability, midline control, and rotational awareness.
It’s one of the best ways to connect strength with movement skill.
To Recap...
Master the fundamentals first. Build the muscle memory. Then progress toward the single arm 10-2 with intention.
With patience and consistent practice, you’ll unlock one of the most dynamic movements in mace training — and a new level of control and power in your swings.
